*** Edit: Oops! This is actually reading from October 12th of 2013*** Hopefully you don’t mind the the mixup today!
Today’s Gospel is from Luke 11:27-28:
While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
This short but great Gospel message as it reminds us of our daily call to Holy Christian living. The woman from the crowd refers to Mary, essentially saying, “Wow!!! Mary is so great and Holy and blessed and lucky because she was chosen to be Your mother and has such an important role in Your life.” But what Jesus tells us, is that Mary is blessed not because of her status as Jesus’ mother, but because she heard the word of God and responded to it.Mary is an amazing example of how we are to live not simply because of her status/relation to Jesus, but her willingness to empty herself of her own desires, wants, conveniences, and plans, to follow God’s call in her life.
That is what we are all called to do! We must not only hear the word of God. We must not only go to church on Sundays and pay attention to the sermon, but we must actually live the word of God in our daily lives. Are we hearing God’s word? Are we allowing His Word to enter our hearts and transform our lives? Are we willing to act like Mary and drop our own plans and selfish desires to do whatever He tells us? How can we live everyday as if it were Sunday, making our actions reflect our beliefs?
Enjoy your week and don’t be afraid to allow God’s Word to call you toward action. It will transform you in more ways than you can imagine!
