Happy 21st night of September! In the words of Earth, Wind and Fire, “Do you remember the 21st night of September? Love was changing the mind of pretenders…” and that is exactly what Jesus [= God = love] (1 John 4:8) was doing in today’s Gospel.
Matthew 9: 9-13:
As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
“Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do…I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.” Yes! Amen to that! The church is often criticized for people pretending to be perfect on Sundays and sinning every other day of the week. Personally, I see a church that is alive and thriving, however I can understand this mentality. If going to church is suppose to make you better, why do church goers still sin??? They have Jesus! This makes no sense!
Well, the church isn’t a fiesta for everyone who has got it all together and does everything perfectly. It is a hospital for sinners! It is a place where we can admit our weaknesses and flaws and turn away from our sins. It is a place where we can be cleansed and made new through the healing sacraments. Never be afraid to ask for help. God’s mercy is endless, He is hope for the hopeless and He loves us. <3
May our Heavenly Father provide healing and be present to you during your days this week and every week. God Bless!
